 In the past few years, America has seen a rise in anti-immigrant populism and misogyny; a divisive “identity liberalism” on college campuses; and an emergence of white nationalism.
What got us here? In his recently released book, Identity, Francis Fukuyama argues that America's economically displaced have aligned themselves with narrower definitions of identity based on nation, religion, sect, race, ethnicity, and gender. The result has brought awareness to the plight of marginalized groups, but it's also prevented America from forging an integrative national identity. And in some instances, it's even pushed citizens towards ideologies of extremism.
Dr. Fukuyama is an iconic, brilliant modern political theorist and speaker. In addition to being a Stanford professor, Dr. Fukuyama is the Director of the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL). He's written widely on issues relating to democratization and international political economy.
With decades of research and scholarship, Dr. Fukuyama has traced the history of the world's political institutions: where we came from, where we are now, and where we will—or will fail to—go. With the rise of identity politics, he argues that we must forge a universal understanding of human dignity, or we will doom ourselves to continuing conflict.
