IPSA and Antalya Bilim University (ABU) have successfully organized the 2nd edition of the IPSA-ABU Summer School for Social Science Research Methods, held virtually from 30 August to 10 September 2021.

The IPSA-ABU Summer School had a high international profile, with 24 participants joining from different parts of the world. The School offered advanced training for graduate students and academics intent on strengthening their methodological skills.

This year, the summer school went virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants showed significant interest in the content analysis courses as a result of practical issues related to conducting more participatory research.

PIPPA NORRIS DISCUSSES "CANCEL CULTURE" DRAWING ON THE ECPR-IPSA SURVEY

On the occasion of IPSA’s 70th and ECPR’s 50th anniversary, we launched a new profile of political science by launching a global survey. The ECPR-IPSA World of Political Science Survey (WPS) aims to understand our profession and the challenges we face. In late 2019, the WPS Survey collected the views, characteristics and experiences of some 2,500 political scientists across more than 100 countries. It was conducted by Prof. Pippa Norris (the Paul F. McGuire Lecturer in Comparative Politics at Harvard Kennedy School) with the help of ECPR and IPSA.

The dataset generated a series of articles, including Cancel Culture: Myth or Reality? by Prof. Norris, which was published in Political Studies. The article looks at whether there is evidence of this phenomenon in our discipline.

1. Institutional initiatives aimed at creating new standards for safe and accountable online environments continue to spring up in Western democracies. The recently published EU Digital Services Act attempts to regulate obligations and accountability among intermediaries across the single market in order to strike a balance between the will to enhance digital services across borders and the need for increased protection to all users, regardless of where they live in the EU. This is one of the key elements in the European Democracy Action Plan founded on three pillars: 1) Protection of the integrity of elections and promotion of democratic participation; 2) Strengthening of media freedom and pluralism, and 3) Fight against disinformation. (Official Records on the IPSAPortal).

2. Threats to individual privacy and freedom stemming from the sharing and de-localization of personal data now occupy a central place in the current media and research agenda. In the last few weeks, the spotlight was on a small Israeli company called NSO. Its software, Pegasus, is ultra-sophisticated spyware, sold “only to government intelligence and law-enforcement agencies” to help them “prevent terrorism, break up criminal operations, find missing people and assist search and rescue teams.” After more than 50,000 phone numbers were leaked and allegedly entered into a system that Pegasus uses for targeting, Amnesty International, in collaboration with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project and 16 media organizations (including The Guardian), launched The Pegasus Project aimed at uncovering the data breach. (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal).

3. The shift to online human activities during the pandemic has resulted in increased monitoring of individual activities. In the era of distance working, remote surveillance software like Sneek – also known as “tattleware” or “bossware” – has grown in popularity as companies seek to create “work from home” policy guidelines during the pandemic. ActivTrak reports that its client base has grown from 50 to 9,000 customers over the past year. Big-name tech companies like Zoom have also dipped their toes into the spy game, with varying degrees of success. In-depth analysis in the Guardian reveals the two sides of these new technologies: accountability vs corporate snooping. (Media Sources on the IPSAPortal).
