IPSA AND IOHE FORMALIZE THEIR COOPERATION
We are happy to announce that the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (OUI-IOHE) signed an agreement to enhance their academic cooperation. Both organizations are based in Montreal and this partnership falls in line with their active participation in Montreal International.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishes a bilateral agreement between the two organizations, allowing them to further their existing collaboration on several fronts.
The bilateral agreement allows IPSA and OUI-IOHE to organize academic panels at each other’s main events in 2023 (the IPSA World Congress of Political Science and the Conference of the Americas on International Education - CAIE).

1. Just a few weeks after being elected to his third term, President Xi Jinping faces widespread protests staged by a loosely coordinated coalition of groups taking to the streets across China and to social media networks. Despite the increasingly repressive rule, dissent in China occurs regularly and is geographically widespread, according to a new analysis by Freedom House. The first edition of the China Dissent Monitor records 668 instances of dissent in China from June to September 2022 against stalled housing projects, labour rights violations, fraud, COVID-19 policies, and state violence, among other grievances. The project includes a database of specific protest incidents and a quarterly analysis of dissent in China. It is available in English and Mandarin ( Thematic Sites on the IPSAPortal).
2. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been partially overshadowed by reports of deaths among the temporary foreign workers used to build the facilities required to host the event. However, Le Monde reminds us that while estimates put the number of workers who died on World Cup construction sites at 6,500, an oft-quoted figure based on a detailed investigation published by The Guardian, the actual figure is difficult to ascertain. Despite the limits of the records of foreign embassies and international organizations, the U.S.-based International Labour Organization (ILO) is one useful source for monitoring working conditions around the world ( Media Sources on the IPSAPortal).
3. As part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), countries have pledged to substantially increase public and private R&D spending and the number of researchers by 2030. The latest data provided by Eurostat offer an insight into global progress towards this key SDG target from 2010 to 2020 through the commitment to R&D spending as a percentage of GDP. With a focus on Gross domestic expenditure on R&D, R&D expenditure by performance sector and R&D expenditure by funding source ( Special Collections on the IPSAPortal).
