1. In a time of polarization and fake news, people feel increasingly uncomfortable participating in public discussions. The latest American Trends Panel (ATP) report from the Pew Research Center reveals that more people find it “stressful and frustrating” to engage in political dialogue with people who hold opposing views. Nearly 60% of today’s adults find these conversations stressful, a 50% increase over 2019. The phenomenon affects Republicans and Democrats and young and old alike but is less pronounced where political views are more moderate. The ATP, created by Pew Research Center in 2014 and managed by Ipsos, is a nationally representative panel, with a total of 10,371 respondents (Research Institutes on the IPSAPortal).

2. Since the Amazon AI recruitment tool had to be scrapped in 2018 due to its gender bias, unintended bias in machine learning has been part of the debate surrounding AI. A group of researchers at the University of Washington and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence has created Ask Delphi in an attempt, according to the New York Times, to address this issue. Ask Delphi is an experimental system that models people’s moral judgments based on different everyday situations. The user types in a situation, clicks “Ponder”, and Delphi provides an ethical guideline. The disclaimer states that Delphi is a research protocol and that “Model outputs should not be used for advice for humans”; but New York Times reported over 3 million visits in the first month (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal).

3. Like the majority of corporations, the world’s biggest banks are facing innovation challenges and competition from new tech-savvy startups. The latest McKinsey's Global Banking Annual Review shows that leading fintech firms, specialists and banks are replicating the model of Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix and Spotify, turning products into features to meet customer needs and keep them engaged. Bloomberg reports that more than $20 billion of venture capital funding has flooded into banking-app startups since the beginning of 2021, according to CB Insights (Special Collections on the IPSAPortal).
